Editorial Standards
How we research, write, and keep our small pet care guides up to date.
How the research is done
Guides are research-based. Species fact cards cite veterinary and zoological sources we actually opened: Merck Veterinary Manual, VCA Animal Hospitals, LafeberVet, ReptiFiles, and Animal Diversity Web. A field is left off the card when we do not have a source. No veterinarian reviews each article. The byline is the SmallPetExpert editorial team, not a named doctor.
How We Research
Our editorial team researches publicly available sources to build each guide. We do not employ veterinarians or claim professional animal-medicine credentials; instead, we aggregate and synthesize what established public sources already agree on.
- Public care literature — husbandry and nutrition guidance published by universities, veterinary hospitals, and animal welfare organizations.
- Manufacturer specifications — product dimensions, materials, and sizing details are checked against the manufacturer's own product pages before we recommend anything.
- Community consensus — long-standing owner communities are reviewed to surface real-world care practices and common mistakes.
When a guide draws on a specific source, we link to it inline. If we can't verify a claim from a public source, we say so rather than present it as fact.
How Our Editorial Scores Work
Some guides show an Our Editorial Score (one to five stars) beside a product. This section explains exactly what that score is, because a star rating can otherwise be mistaken for something it is not.
What it is: our editorial team's overall judgement of how well that product suits the use case described in that article. The byline on every article is the SmallPetExpert editorial team.
What it is not: it is not a laboratory or hands-on test result, it is not Amazon's customer rating, it is not supplied by the manufacturer, and it is not a veterinary assessment. If you are looking for Amazon's rating for a product, it is shown on the Amazon listing itself.
How it is formed: from the research process described above — manufacturer specifications, published care literature, and owner community consensus — read together with the trade-offs spelled out in that article's own comparison. A product with a strong feature but a serious drawback will not score highly, and the article says why.
It is not a formula. We do not compute these scores with weighted dimensions, and we do not publish per-dimension weights, because no such weights exist. Each score is a holistic read of the evidence in the article. We would rather say that plainly than publish a rubric we do not actually apply.
Safety comes first. A score never overrides a stated safety warning. Where a product carries a real hazard, the article says so regardless of how many stars the product would otherwise earn.
Update Policy
Every article shows its actual publish date, and pages that have been revised show their last-updated date. We regularly review existing guides and update them when better information, new products, or corrected details are available.
